A lot to love

My new sewing space, 5 feet south of my previous sewing space, is bringing me much joy. For one thing, it's about twice as bright as the other room. For another, check out this part of the setup: a mini pressing station right behind the sewing machine, and a swivel chair between.

This makes pressing WIPs so much quicker; I just spin around, press, and turn back to the machine! I used to have to cross the room to press and I sometimes would lose steam from the extra effort required. (I walk all over the clinic every day at work so hopefully that means I'm not being totally pathetic here).

The mat is a portable Omnigrid thing that has a pressing surface as well as a small firm backed cutting board, for taking with you wherever. I've never used it to go sewing outside my home but I get lots of use inside my home - it's great for doing some cutting on the floor! I have the cutting mat folded under since I don't need that right now. I'm so glad I took the time to really ponder how I could set up my space better, having this little station is great.

Looks like a really nice set up. Now all you have to do is get in there a sew and sew...

Looks awesome! I used to fold my cutting mat under the pressing board like that when I took it to classes, but the cutting mat started to warp from the heat. Bummer. I was doing some pressing of appliques, so I had the heat on there for quite a while. Now, I don't fold it back like that any more. A thought: Can you hang the cutting part off the back of the table or something so it doesn't warp on you? Just a suggestion! Love your new set up. Looks so light and bright!

(The warping may not be an issue if you just spin around and do a quick press, then go back to sewing. But if you're going to have heat on it for longer periods of time, just wanted you to know about the problem I had!)

a more work friendly area, is so much more sewable. I love having everything right there. Getting up over and over is for the birds.

I love having a small pressing area just a swivel away! It looks like you have really good light in this room.

My mom bought me that pressing board/cutting mat for Christmas. I haven't lugged out my mammoth cutting board or ironing board since! LOVE it!

Your set-up is very similar to mine- and it is really convenient. You're going to like it a lot!

I'm left-handed - so I set up my ironing board at sit-down height and with the pointy end on the left. That way I can put my iron on the pointy end and use the square end to press fabric. I just "scoot" from my sewing machine to the ironing board when I need to press something.

Your new sewing space looks so inviting and I am sure you are enjoying it. My DH made me a small press station and mine fits over the cover of my treadle. They are so slick but I would also caution about pressing on top of your cutting mat, OOOH I learned the hard way!
