Concept quilt

This is the coolest thing I've ever made. Or the weirdest.

It's for my husband. I started it almost two years ago. Some of that slowness was my limited tolerance for brown. I definitely did not get into quilting for brown fabric.

And yet, I love that guy and he loves wood and I got this idea in my head I would make him a quilt that looked like a wood floor. All texture. So manly. Utterly unique.

It's very different from my usual work, where I'm often trying to capture light and movement. There is no light or movement here. But I did enjoy the feeling of doing something so unusual. Playing with the ideas of hard and soft, rigid and flexible.

I loved the challenge of quilting each "board" differently. It was fun going for that feel of an organic pattern. A very relaxing way to stitch.

I love the back. And so does this kid. (She helped with the binding!)

And of course I loved giving it to him. It is just the right size to be shared in the evening as we sit on the sofa together.

So unique! And I can imagine how you struggled a bit. Brown is necessary but not particularly fun, right? But the finished quilt is fantastic, worth the perseverance.

It looks great. When I made my beehive quilt (designed to look like a beehive box) I really regretted not doing woodgrain quilting on the 'wooden' parts. This just makes me regret it even more :)

BTW I like brown :)

Well I'm glad you got past your not-love for brown fabric, because this is genius!

LOVE the free-motion individual treatment on the "boards." Isn't it true that you learn something new and surprising when stretching beyond your comfort zone? I have found that it comes out better than I could have imagined - as your husband's quilt did. the back is amazing too!

Very cool!!! I love the concept here-- you've captured it beautifully. I'm also impressed that he's so willing to share! (My husband prefers to burrito himself up, leaving no blanket for me!) :P

Way cool! I have a hard time working on manly quilts also. I need lots of bright happy color and the two do not often mix.

Super cool. Guess what? My guy is a wood guy too. I made a very manly quilt top for him years ago but didn't quite know what the quilt design should be - was drawing blanks. Then one day it hit me, wood grain design for a wood guy! Haven't gotten to quilting that quilt yet, but looking to get it on my machine asap. Thank you so much for the inspiration. My only conundrum is exactly how do I divide the quilt top? It's a two block design with geese borders in between. I will be testing the design out on paper first to see what it might look like. Thanks so much for posting this very special quilt.
